Chelsea Flower Show: 'Paradise' garden rises from rubble of Japan tsunami

But, encouraged by friends and colleagues, the 53-year-old from Tokyo changed his mind last month and resolved to create a new garden, inspired by the tsunami, and send a message to the world that Japan was fighting back.

The garden would be a symbol of the nation’s determination to renew itself and grow again. “I wanted to show the spirit of Japan,” he said.

The landscape artist had no time to lose. He had to find 20 replacements for the professional gardeners who had dropped out, and admits that the lack of time meant he had to recruit some “keen amateurs”.

“We had to move fast,” he said. He worked hard to find sponsors but still ended up having to fund some of the trip from his own pocket.

The first members of the team did not arrive in England until April 26 and others came a week later, leaving only three weeks to create the garden, called “Beautiful Paradise: making memories with a green poem”.

Since then the team, aged from 19 to 60, has worked furiously, from 8am to 8pm seven days a week, to be ready for Tuesday’s opening. Their creation will feature as one of Chelsea’s select group of international entries, which also includes gardens from Malaysia and South Korea.

Mr Ishihara, a married father of three whose office in Tokyo was shaken by the earthquake that caused the tsunami, was particularly inspired by a visit to the town of Kesennuma in northeastern Japan, which was destroyed.

The designer was shocked and moved by the scenes of devastation. “So many people died there and many of them have still not been found,” he said.

He was struck by how many acer shrubs were in the area and decided to include 10 varieties of the plant in his Chelsea garden as a symbol of the town.

The meticulously-detailed Japanese garden contains hundred of mostly small plants, waterfalls, a white arbour and a narrow, winding path. Its creator aims to express “an ideal and universal relationship between nature and man that transcends languages and cultures while capturing the spirit of Japan”.

It is the spirit of survival and hope embodied by Japan’s “miracle pine tree”, the only one out of 70,000 pine trees in the seaside town of Rikuzentakata that survived the tsunami.

A huge poster of the miracle tree adorns the wall of a Japanese stall at the Chelsea Flower Show where greetings cards, plants and other gifts will be sold to raise money for victims of the disaster, in which around 25,000 people died or are missing presumed dead.
