I’m going to be studying Japanese in Japan this summer, and I knew that I’d need a dictionary. Paper dictionaries are good, but you pay for comprehensiveness with bulk. Naturally, I turned to my trusty iPod, hoping to find a good Japanese dictionary app for English speakers. With Japanese, an app from codefromtokyo, I think I’ve found it.
Japanese is a comprehensive dictionary app with all the features I could ever ask for, save perhaps for voice recognition (a tall order in any case). With over 159,000 words, 12,000 kanji entries, flash card capabilities, multiple ways to search for and store words, and even handwriting recognition, it’s hard to find much lacking with Japanese’s coverage. If you’re looking for a good, solid English to Japanese and Japanese to English dictionary, Japanese is a great choice.
When searching for a word, Japanese provides a number of options. For normal words, the app accepts either romanized input using the English keyboard or Japanese input using the Japanese keyboard, which can be installed through the Settings app. For kanji, the app provides many options, ranging from component- and radical-based searches to SKIP (System of Kanji Indexing by Patterns), which specifies the layout of each character. Users who have installed the Traditional Chinese keyboard can also draw a kanji and have the app recognize it. It works pretty well, and is a great feature. (Keep in mind that the recognition abilities come courtesy of Apple, not the developers.) Also worth noting: the app contains animations depicting the proper stroke order for each kanji.
Other nice features include the ability to maintain multiple “lists” of words, flashcards, a browsing history, and lexical categories (i.e. particles, pronouns, る-verbs, etc). The dictionary is very comprehensive, and includes plenty of example sentences. Furigana (small characters that denote the readings of kanji) can also be turned on. The built-in flashcards make studying easy. Perhaps most importantly, the app is fast ; despite the bulk of its database, searching is fast and easy, and Japanese is just very responsive overall.
I have yet to find any downsides to Japanese. It’s impressively comprehensive, including everything from a giant database of words and example sentences to flashcards and handwriting recognition for kanji. The only thing it lacks is audio, in terms of both voiced samples and recognition, but I didn’t really expect to see that here. Regardless, Japanese is a fantastic, beautifully built, and extremely useful dictionary app. I look forward to using it this summer!

Looking for a way to learn and/or read kanji? Use your iPhone (or iPad) to draw kanji and find its meaning. As there are literally thousands of kanji, paper dictionaries and most iPhone/iPad Japanese dictionaries on their own are almost useless, as it can take a long time to look for just one kanji. I have discovered a method of translating kanji which is free and very reliable.
I have basic conversational Japanese skills, so I can speak and listen OK. I can read hiragana and katakana fine. The most frustrating thing about living here is the not being able to understand kanji.?Having now lived in Japan for a few months, I have tried many methods to understand kanji on the spot. Here is a free method to understand kanji using your iPhone.
How to use your iPhone to draw and translate Japanese kanjiFirst download the iPhone app Kotoba! app, go to the Dictionary section and tap inside the search box. The normal keyboard will appear on-screen, however there is a new button which looks like a globe, tap this.
You are now in a new screen which enables you to draw with your finger. As you draw new lines, the closest match appears on the right side of the screen. At times it can be a little tricky to find the right match, and you may need to clear what you have drawn and try again, most of the time it comes up with the correct kanji. If you are not finding the correct one, try changing the stroke order.
You can search for just one kanji, or input multiples that may make a word. Once you are done, tap the globe again to return to the English keyboard where you can press the search button.
It is easiest to translate kanji when you are seeing single words, for example a sign. It can be a little more difficult to translate kanji in a written document, as Japanese doesn’t use spaces between words, so it is difficult to know when to stop and search.
Try it for yourself, it isn’t perfect, but compared to some apps (which cost $5 of more) that take a photo and try to interpret the kanji, this is much more reliable with a higher success rate.
