Irish Heritage Day a homecoming in Heckscherville
HECKSCHERVILLE - The Boyle sisters grew up listening to their grandfather tell stories about the "Irish Valley."
So for Tara Boyle, Daniele Boyle Clay and Bevin Boyle Buchheister, Sunday's Irish Heritage Day in Heckscherville was a step back into family history. They traveled with their mother, Helene O'Donnell Boyle, to join the celebration.
"They were stories only he could tell," Daniele said. "He made the valley sound like paradise. It did live up to the stories when we came here for the first time. It is very pastoral and peaceful."
Helene's family, the O'Donnells, owned the general store in Heckscherville, catering to the village coal miners and more than a few times helped the miners and their families during difficult financial times.
"I often heard stories from people that my family would supply the miners with food during strikes over labor laws," Helene said Sunday. "It was very surprising the first time we came here that people remembered our family."
Locals will tell you that there has always been a strong sense of family in Heckscherville, with people remembering all the families that lived in the valley.
"It's home to me," Frances Callaghan Hertz, Primrose said. "My family home here is long gone, but it will always feel like home."
Hertz and about 75 others participated in the "Walkin' to St. Kieran," one of Sunday's events.
The contingent, led by the Cass Township Ancient Order of Hibernians, started at 1 p.m. at the Clover Fire Company and went to the former St. Kieran Roman Catholic Church, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2008, just before being closed by the Diocese of Allentown as part of its consolidation effort.
Parishioners of St. Kieran were merged into St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Parish in the former St. Vincent de Paul Church building, Minersville, along with parishioners from St. Vincent de Paul and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Minersville.
The group stopped in the cemetery in front of the church where a ceremony for deceased AOH members took place.
"This is what the AOH would do when someone passed away," local historian Tommy Symons, who led the ceremony, said. "The members have a service and Irish flags are placed on all the deceased members' graves."
Symons said 41 AOH members where honored this year, more than other years.
"When the cemetery grass was cut this year and cleaned up, we discovered four more grave markers and we just found Thomas Kennedy this morning," he said. "To find new names is just a thrill.

A history of Ireland in 100 objects: The dazzling regalia that survives from ancient Ireland suggests that kings had enormous prestige, both physical and spiritual. But at least by the early Iron Age, royal power had become highly conditional.
To do so, she draws on Niall Ferguson's Virtual History, writing: the details must be probable or plausible for Mithradates' time and place, and they must match contemporary experiences, derived from ancient literature, art, and history and/or

Tor Fantasy [share_ebook] Emerald Magic: Great Tales of Irish ...
Though the Emerald Isle is no stranger to tales of the fantastic (everything from the Hound Cuchlain to Darby O'Gill and his leprachaun friends), most of the fantasy works dealing with Ireland have limited themselves to either ancient history/Celtic legends and lore, sentimental tales of wee folk, or ghostly tales of hauntings in old deserted castles. Needless to say, there is more to the history and culture of Ireland than the sort of entertainment fare popularized each year around March 17th.
