Stepping into António Horta-Osório’s office on the top floor of Lloyds Banking Group ‘s headquarters, the shift in style at the helm of the bank is immediately clear. Stripped of the heavy antique furniture and ornate oil paintings favoured by his predecessor, Eric Daniels, the new chief executive’s choice of decor is clean and simple.
The transformation is symbolic of his early efforts to sweep away the problems that have haunted Lloyds, Britain’s biggest high street bank by customers, since its acquisition of HBOS almost three years ago.

Lloyds Baking Group is expected to retain its Scottish Widows business, The Scotsman has reported.
The strategic review set in motion on the arrival of Lloyds’ new group chief executive, António Horta-Osório, in March, had prompted rumours of a sale but according to the newspaper, the life and pensions provider is considered too valuable to form part of any disposal programme.
Lloyds TSB acquired Scottish Widows in 1999, for around £7 billion, and the business later absorbed HBOS’s Clerical Medical.
The Edinburgh-based company’s future has been uncertain since the scale of the problems created by Lloyds’ rescue of HBOS first emerged.
