Myrtle Beach Pelicans don't balk at beer night

The way Statia Price of Myrtle Beach sees it, summer entertainment on the Grand Strand consists of "The four Bs: beach, baseball, boiled peanuts and beer," she said.

And the four often work in concert with each other, especially the baseball and beer pairing. She combined them on May 26 during the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' most recent "Thirsty Thursday" promotion featuring $1 12-ounce draft beers from 6-8 p.m., a stretch that begins an hour before the first pitch and concludes an hour into the game.

"I love coming out here and I love Thirsty Thursday," said Price, 22. "I come with my friends and it's a lot of fun."

Take me out to the ballgame

When Scott Brown took over as general manager of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans one year ago, he was prepared for every facet of the job - except maybe for the competition. Not the opposing pitchers and players of the Carolina League, but the Grand Strand's abundance of entertainment options the minor league team must fight for customers.

Drinking linked to problems in the ballpark stands

It was "College Night" at the Brewers game and season ticket holder Aaron Gross knew what that meant. Cheap tickets for sale. Cheap beer at the tailgate parties. Plenty of booze-fueled trash talk inside the stadium. And, eventually, some alcohol-induced insults leading to suds-soaked fisticuffs.

Attending a baseball game has long been a family activity. It's renowned as a bonding experience between father and son. Yet washing a hot dog down with a few beers is also considered part of the enjoyment of the game for adults, so the family experience and alcohol consumption commingle at a ballpark.

An ugly beating incident in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium early this season that left a man attending a game with his wife and two children in a coma have some baseball teams examining their alcohol policies.

In Myrtle Beach, where any alcohol-related disturbances have been relatively nonviolent at BB&T Coastal Field, the Advanced Class A Pelicans have no intentions of changing their alcohol serving practices.

"Beer is a legal beverage and a ballpark is a place where it's socially acceptable to sit, watch a game, have a hot dog and drink a beer with your neighbors and people from your community," Pelicans General Manager Scott Brown said. "I think it's a huge part [of the experience] and it's a good marriage."

Liquor can only be sold in BB&T Field's enclosed skyboxes, while beer, wine and wine coolers are sold in concourse concession stands and in the grandstands and bleachers. There are two longtime beer salesmen walking through the stadium seats, and only adults sell alcohol at concession stands and a right-field Beer Garden with drafts including Harp and Blue Moon. Two beer sizes of at least a pint are sold for up to $7.

Boiled Peanuts yea or nea - Paleo Hacks.com

It is peanut season down here and that means boiled peanuts, one of my favorite foods. I have gotten mixed messages about peanuts and I was wondering what people thought.

On the plus side boiled peanuts are made fresh, the green peanuts you use have to be no more then a week or two old and it is typical to see them boiled the same day next to the field they grew in (roadside stands being the usual way to get some).

On the minus they are peanuts and fairly nutrient dense.

yes it can increase the flavonoids but 212 degrees and even hotter is way too much heat for a legume with 25-30% pufa. you don't need to find an article that discusses the pufa content of peanuts specifically. o6 pufa in general is fragile already, and you want to limit your intake. but the pufa cannot withstand the boiling temperature. if you eat a handful... will you die on the spot. no certainly not. no more than people will die on the spot when they eat a big piece of cheesecake or a 44oz pepsi or a bag of chips fried in corn oil. but i still give boiled peanuts a red flag, personally.
