Transport cuts may hit elderly and disabled in Redcar and Cleveland

Schoolchildren, the elderly and the disabled are among those who may be affected by plans to reduce transportation costs.

Transport children to religious schools, transportation to day care centers, and support of travel for the disabled are among the services that could be affected by the action proposed by Redcar and Cleveland Council.

Councillor Helen McLuckie, Cabinet member for highways, transport and planning, told the cabinet that the authority put forward proposals "with a heavy heart."

The Council faces £ 15.1m cut this year and £ 17m with an additional over the next four years.

Cuts have been made to support non-commercial services cut while the dial and the transport service has been removed.

Now the authority is to consult on the proposed savings in other areas.

They include:

:: The withdrawal of free travel day centers for seniors and adults with learning difficulties. The cost of transporting adult day service is £ 525.138 a year with 191 adults receiving travel free. A £ 1.50 one-way fee would generate up to £ 100,000 per year.Means testing could be introduced to determine who gets free travel.

:: Introducing a new system for those seeking a concessionary bus pass for reasons of disability. Currently people are sent to general practitioners for an evaluation board, which costs £ 25. In the future, a therapist of the designated local authority, professional or physical therapist may perform the evaluation and the applicant may have to pay.

:: Remove or the introduction of fees for transportation services for preschool children and early intervention and assessment centers.Service charge £ 43 654 and is used by an average of 14 children.

:: End discretionary travel free for children attending denominational schools. The board passes 168.750 pounds per year with a discretionary service and free travel and improved. It has over 300 children attending St Bede RC School Marske, St Joseph's RC School and Sacred Heart RC Loftus High School Redcar. Some children may still be entitled to statutory free travel. End discretionary free trip could save more than £ 100,000 a year.

: Focusing only travel free for learners aged 25 years and with special educational needs attend local colleges. It cost the authority more than £ 100,000 a year. The Council will consult on the introduction of fees for parents.
