Bands announced for 31st annual Cajun Festival

It’s a little early to start thinking about the Medina Lake Cajun Festival in September, but down at the Medina Lake Betterment Association, they’ve been thinking about the fund-raising festival for some time. One of the planning activities is to line up the bands to play the festival set for Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Lakehills Civic Center.

Two standards are returning: Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band from New Orleans and Rodney Thiobodeaux & Tout Les Soir. Other bands include Jean-Pierre Blanchard & the Zydeco Angels, originally from Nice, France. Texas-based Cedryl Ballou & the Zydeco Trendsetters, who have become regulars since Hurricane Rita, will be back. A new band to the festival, Les Flammes de Rouge from San Antonio, are also scheduled. And don’t forgot the Band-Aids Jazz Band to lead off the festival.

The Bruce Daigrepont Cajun Band is a Sunday regular at the original Tipitina’s, at the corner of Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas Streets in New Orleans. Daigrepont is one of New Orleans’ and Louisiana’s great musical institutions; and he has emerged as one of Cajun music’s finest cultural ambassadors.

In North America the band has performed at such prestigious venues as New York’s Lincoln Center, Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts, the Winnipeg Folk Festival and the National Folk Festival. Over the past ten years he has taken his music to France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. At the request of the American Embassies, Daigrepont and his band have performed even in the third-world countries of El Salvador and Venezuela. Most rewarding, though, are his annual “homecoming” pilgrimages to the French-speaking Canadian maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, where the history of the Louisiana Cajuns had its harsh beginnings. It is here that the deeper meanings of Daigrepont’s original song creations can be appreciated and celebrated to the fullest extent.

 Daigrepont will be coming to Texas in September. His last appearance at the Medina Lake Cajun Festival was in 2008.

 Rodney Thiobodeaux & Tout Les Soir also last played the Cajun Festival in 2008. Tout Les Soir is a Cajun band with five musicians, each with different musical backgrounds, but all brought together by one music called Cajun.

Terra

Sometimes I want to post more about a word than facebook will allow.  And, lately, I have been blanking out in the blog world.  It’s tough to stare at a blank screen.  Often, I refuse to stare.  I click close instead.  The blank page is too intimidating.  I don’t have this problem on facebook.  On facebook, I am often told, too long, shorten it.

Time to combine these problems.  Here, I can say as much as I like.  So, I will use Visual Latin to pull as many English words as I possibly can out of a Latin word.  Then, I will send one or two over to Facebook.  Oh, yeah.  Good idea.  Well, I like it anyway.
