Campaign to identify, save water bodies today

Members of Jal Biradari, Pune district Co-op. Housing Federation Ltd, along with the public, will take up a drive to identify water bodies as part of Nadi & paryavarniya pravah saurakshan saptah, which aims at protecting rivers and water bodies. The drive will be on from June 5-11.

Jal Biradari convenor Suneel Joshi told a news conference that the drive aims at promoting people's participation along with the support of Bavdhan and Baner area sabhas. The drive, also supported by water conservationist Rajendra Singh, will cover nullahs, rivers and lakes.

Joshi has appealed to the citizens to come forward. One can get a video of the water body on their mobile phones and provide the details to us, he said. The group plans to compile the details and students who are into environment research have also been urged to join the drive.

While group member Sarang Yadwadkar added that the maximum flood level is rising every year, but the government is least bothered. Thus, there is a need for citizens to prepare a disaster management plan. A monitoring committee will be formed for preparing a disaster management plan, which will help avert floods in the city. Baner area sabha member who will be part of the group pointed out that the encroachments around water bodies were cause of concern and the city is under threat of flood because of illegal constructions, said Saraph. He said the city might receive more rainfall this monsoon but wondered if the corporation has taken any measure to avoid flood-like situations, considering last year's experience, when the civic administration woke up late to the reality. He said that the district administration has not bothered to share the disaster management plan with the public. In the detailed project report, there is no information on the location of floods, about the loss and the reasons of floods. “There was no identification of hotspots from the point of view of disaster. So, we will prepare our own plan, identify the hotspots and look at the facilities to be provided, such as water, food, electricity, among others if such situations arise,'' he said. Sandeep Joshi, director of Shrishti Eco-Research Institute (SERI), said the members will submitt he plan to the chief minister soon while. Suhas Patwardhan, president, of the Co-op. Housing Federation Ltd, said the federation will support any movement for creating awareness.
