Budget cuts force high schools to trim down athletics

Playing for the team in ice hockey at Thomas Proctor High School Utica was always something of a dream for Matt Gozy cool. He started skating when he was 2 and now entering his junior year of high school, right winger expected to make an impact. Instead, Gozy was hit hardest with the check for his life. The Raiders hockey team has been terminated.

With New York cut its spending on education by 1.3 billion public school districts and left to cope with painful cuts in the budgets, high school and junior high sports programs are feeling the pressure fallout .

Proctor is among the hardest-hit schools in Central New York from the budget fallout. In addition to slashing the hockey program, Proctor also eliminated fall cheerleading, indoor track and all of its modified or junior high athletic programs.

''I was really upset about it," Gozy says. "Because obviously, I've been playing hockey my whole life. It's what I looked forward to, playing for my school. Now I can't do that."

Gozy and Proctor are not alone in feeling the pain.

The Syracuse City School District is cutting close to $1 million out of its athletic budget. The loss of state funding is forcing the city to consolidate teams within its primary high schools. Instead of four separate teams at Fowler, Corcoran, Henninger and Nottingham, there will be one girls soccer team and one girls lacrosse team for the entire city. Fowler and Corcoran, who have split the last two city baseball championships, will combine to form a single baseball team next spring. Henninger and Nottingham will combine to field one boys lacrosse team. And so on.

"Nobody is happy," says Chris Hodge, director of athletics for the Syracuse City School District. "I would prefer everybody have their own team.This is not the best situation, but we had to do something to try to help with the loss of our funding. "

Rich areas like Fayetteville-Manlius reduced budgets without cutting athletic teams. Sports Director Rich Roy says the FM district office has seen this day coming and made plans a few years ago. He says the school has cut the teams first year students, like many schools in the region other. They have refined the program to reduce travel costs. No teams have been cut in the last budget crisis, Roy said. FM will continue to field 95 teams - Varsity modified through - with 125 in 30 sports coaches.And, what seems almost an anomaly, the school is to get a new privately financed $ 1.3 million Turf Field should be ready for football season this fall.
