Lonely Planet guide book praise for Lake District

The Lake District has received yet another accolade in The Lonely Planet guide.

The latest guide book says the Lake District is “packed with more natural appeal than almost anywhere else in Britain”.

But Ellis Butcher, spokesman for Cumbria Tourism, said: “I would go one further than that and say it is ‘packed with more natural wonders than anywhere else in the world’ – there are very few places comparable to it.”

He said: “For us to be acknowledged in a very well respected guide like the Lonely Planet is amazing.

“Those guys know what they’re on about as they are well-seasoned travellers and have seen the best of the world. To receive an accolade from them is a tremendous achievement.”

Mr Butcher said one of his favourite areas of the Lake District is Borrowdale.

He said: “I love all the areas but Borrowdale is my favourite place. It’s a narrow corridor but it really is incredibly spectacular.”

Last year the 2010 guide said: “For sheer scenic splendour, few places in England can measure up to the outlandishly beautiful Lake District, where Wordsworth, Coleridge and their Romantic compatriots famously sought their poetic muse in the 19th century.

“The landscape of the Lakes is as breathtaking as any you’ll find in Switzerland or the French Alps – a sweeping panorama of humpbacked mountains, razorblade crags and scree-covered hillsides, strewn with mountainous tarns and some of the largest natural lakes anywhere in England.”

The recent back-to-back bank holidays helped increase bookings and attract more tourists to the county.

Last week, a TripAdvisor survey ranked Windermere at number 18 out of 20 in top tourist destinations.

And last month Keswick was named Britain’s ninth favourite town or small city by the Rough Guide travel books.

It rated above both Cambridge and Stratford-upon-Avon – four and six in the TripAdvisor poll.
