Life story: For Dr. Joseph Shields, care of patients came first

Dr. Joseph Shields knew what it meant to be in pain.

Born Oct. 5, 1936, in Ida Grove, Iowa, Shields was in his early 20s when a horseback riding accident left him with a broken back while he was home in Colorado on leave from the Army. Military doctors weren't able to address his persistent back pain, and when he was discharged from the service, Shields found himself back in Colorado Springs, under the care of a chiropractor named Dr. Shields (no relation), who finally offered the young man relief.

From that moment, Shields, who died May 25 at age 74, knew he wanted to be a chiropractor, too.

"He had a passion for it," says son Joe Shields, a teacher from Vashon Island, Wash. "He wanted to help people who had the same kind of problem that he'd had and get the (same) kind of relief."

Although Shields already had some college under his belt, he still had seven years of training in both chiropractic and naturopathy ahead of him.

"You've got to be kind of driven to do that with three kids," his son says.

Shields studied at Colorado College in Colorado Springs before entering Lincoln Chiropractic School in Indianapolis. He completed his education at
Western States Chiropractic College in Portland in the early 1970s.

Shields started practicing in 1973 on Lombard Street in North Portland. By 1976, his client list was big enough that he'd bought a building on Southeast Hawthorne and moved his practice. During the 1970s, Shields also delivered babies in home births.

Joe estimates his father saw up to 80 patients a day, an incredible figure that Shields' former office manager, Ruth Schulte, corroborates.

"Insane, it was. He was just so busy treating patients," says Schulte, who worked for Shields in the 1980s. "You could just call him or go over and see him. There was no such thing as office hours. He was truly dedicated. One in a million."

Kept rates low

Shields was known for not raising his rates from 1976 onward. He charged $10 for an office visit, which could include any combination of chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy, physical therapy, nutrition consultation and even ultrasound.

"He just did everything, from your head to your toes," Schulte says. "You go to a regular chiropractor and they'll just go, 'Where do you hurt?' (and) they'll treat just those things. (Shields) just treated everything, and it all went together and you feel good.
