Pet food recall over Salmonella fear

If you are in the habit of giving your dog pig ear treats as a snack, you are to be commended. Most vets agree the treats are excellent for strengthening your pooch’s teeth and keeping them cleaner between cleanings.

For the time being, you should proceed with caution, however, before lending Fido “an ear.” A Connecticut pet food company has recalled boxes of its pig ears chews owing to a possible Salmonella risk. This is the second time in less than a month that a pet food manufacturer has recalled this particular item .

The treats in question are Bravo! Brand Pig Ear chews. The voluntary recall involves 50-count bulk packages of oven-roasted Pig Ears shipped to distributors and retailers on the East and West coasts between January 1 and February 28. The suspicion that the product line might be infected with Salmonella was discovered during routine sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

Pets with Salmonella may display a variety of symptoms ranging from decreased appetite and energy to bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Humans are also susceptible to contracting poisoning from the pathogen by handling contaminated pet products.
