Local Hospitals Running Short On Some Prescription Drugs

When you go to the hospital, you expect the drugs you need to be there, but area hospitals said they're having a hard time keeping some drugs in stock.

One health care group calls drug shortages a pending health crisis that could end up hitting you in the wallet.

At Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, a complex system keeps track of the drugs patients need, drugs that are getting harder to find.

"We've had to deal with drug shortages for many years," said Bob Begliomin, Lehigh Valley Health Network's pharmacy administrator. "However, the last two years, by far, have been the worst."

The drugs in shortest supply are often the ones patients need the most.

"Pain medications like morphine or hydromorphone, 'oldie-but-goodie' drugs like epinephrine and furosemide we've seen shortages on," said St. Luke's pharmacy director, Patrick Ferguson.

Hospitals blame several factors. In some cases, drug manufacturers have merged.

"In the past, we might have had four or five manufacturers of a product," said Begliomin. "It's now down to one or two."

"And when one of those companies has difficulty in manufacturing a product, it creates a significant shortage as that other company cannot meet the demand," said Ferguson.

Add to that tighter FDA regulations on drug makers and a shortage of raw materials from overseas, and you have a recipe for trouble.

"It has been a very difficult situation," said Begliomin.

Area hospitals have created response teams to monitor the drug market and anticipate shortages. They adjust usage and dosage as needed to preserve supply.

"We buy months of the drug at a time when we think it's going to be short," said Ferguson.

So far, both hospitals said shortages have not affected patient care, but they are spending more money.

"We spend at least 40 man hours per week in the pharmacy department handling these shorts," said Ferguson.

When hospitals can't adjust their usage, they sometimes have to buy from emergency vendors, who stock drugs that are in short supply.

"And they sell it to you at an inflated price," said Ferguson.

Those are all costs that could eventually be passed on to you or your insurance carrier.

Hospital groups said the biggest problem is drug makers rarely give them advance notice of shortages.
