'So You Think You Can Dance' recap: Salt Lake City and New York City auditions

I left the first two audition cities wondering where the male talent was and thankfully, thankfully this episode delivers. But before that happens, I’m puzzled as the first “judge” brought out in Utah is Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin. They tell me it’s her first time on the judges panel, but that’s all we get. What’s she doing here? Will she be a rotating judge this year? Will she be choreographing dance pieces? Was she hanging out in Utah and they were one judge short? I want answers!

Unfortunately there are none, and the show’s producers ease my mind by starting off with not one, but two male dancers performing together. And they’re clearly pandering to me and me alone because these dancers are steppers and I love stepping! There are few types of dance as immediately entertaining, though I’m not sure how this fits into the scheme of the show. They’re off to choreography and eventually, one of the two makes it through.

I promised myself I wasn’t going to go dancer by dancer this week, but I’m compelled by the second audition of the night. Last week brought us Amber Williams and her quirky personality. This week we’re given Chyna Smith whose personality might be best described as…creepy. “No one is as excited to see our cameras as super fan Chyna Smith,” they tell us. Despite name-dropping five former contestants before performing, she’s got great control. The judges like her and she runs right to the camera to celebrate, ignoring her family along the way. She’s through to Vegas though I’m still creeped out.

Annie Gratton’s up next and her back-story is they’ve had a lot of blondes audition and she’s a redhead. Way to stretch your imagination there. She throws too many tricks into her routine for my liking, but her father’s a former dancer and the two have somehow never danced together. These judges must get pretty bored sitting there all day because they bring him up on stage to dance with his daughter. She’s through to Vegas. Good job dad, I would have made her do the choreography.

A montage of female dancers quickly follows, with Robin Antin telling them she wants to mold them into future Pussycat Dolls. Seriously what is she doing here again?

Finally, we’re back to the guys. Tadd Gadduang’s part jazz dancer, part b-boy and all tricks. But boy are they good tricks. If Timothy Joseph went right to Vegas last week, so should this guy. And he does…but can I get a contemporary male dancer here?
