Sloan Auto Fair draws a crowd to downtown Flint

FLINT, Michigan — Car enthusiasts of all ages flocked downtown to the Flint Cultural Center to see the sights at the annual Sloan Auto Fair.

“I like every single one of these cars,” said Carson Miller, 5 from Flint. Carson came with his dad Chris to see the show.

“I like to play with them and sometimes I build some,” Carson said. “I just like to play with them.”

His favorite car so far was a green low-rider — a 1998 Chevy S-10.

Bob Beam, 75, came from Birch Run to show his black 1918 Chevy 490 Touring at the show.

“I’ve had the car since 1959 and we used the car in our wedding in 1961,” he said. His wedding anniversary was Friday.

Beam said taking care of the car was easy.

“I just keep it shiny and drive it,” he said. The car gets about 20 miles to the gallon.

Beam was at the very first Sloan auto show and has been coming off and on ever since.

“It's changed from a traditional car show to an overall show that includes modified and antiques and show cars,” he said. “It does raise money for the museum and that's what we're doing. That's what it's about.”

One of the hits of the show this year was the 1956 Taylor Flying Car or Aerocar. The car has detachable wings that can be put up to turn it into a working airplane and was drawing quite a crowd of onlookers.

“I’d like to go up for a flight,” said Owosso resident Greg Griffith, 41, who was admiring the car. “If they asked me, I’d go right now.”

Griffith said his favorite part of the show were the older cars.

“They were built well,” he said. “It reminds me of when I was younger, back when we were kids.”

Tim Shickles, the Director of the Sloan Museum, said the show had been progressing well so far this year.

“We've got 538 cars on the grounds right now and it's only 1:30p.m.,” he said. “I think we'll top our numbers from last year.”

Last year’s show had over 700 cars displayed, he said.

Another draw for the show this year was it’s theme of celebrating 100 years of Chevrolet. The museum has been doing displays in honor of the brand and will change out their current display at the end of the month for one telling the story of the brand’s heritage.

Shickles also said that the Vintage Chevrolet Club has been working to have a parade featuring one Chevy from every year of production.
