VIN HELP - AACA Forums

In Canada we call it the vehicles 'ownership'. We have to change it over to the new owner within 6 days or face a fine. And like you we have to have the Interprovincial Insurance pink slip and our driver's licence on board. The ownership/insurance are always in the vehicle glovebox or perhaps in the wallet of the owner/driver. But we ALWAYS have the ownership and if you loose it you just go to the M.O.T./D.O.T. and pay $10 for another one. Mind you they pull up the vehicle's VIN on their computers and see that you are the legal owner and cross check via your driver's licence. But I had to do this in 2006 for my Dodge Neon and I was in and out of the M.O.T. office in 2 minutes. We do not have this 'Where's the title for the vehicle' scenario you Yanks are always discussing. Or 'I've never been able to get a title for the vehicle from the previous owner'. Why is not the original ownership, that came with the first buyer/owner purchase, just passed down through the life of the vehicle? Where on earth do they go? To the far side of the Moon? Why are you people always chasing the 'title'? This seems to be an American only game as I know owners in other countries and they also do not have this 'title' problem. Somebody put me out of my misery. Explain please!! The indivual states regulate the ownership. If a vehicle is sold out of state the title has to be changed over to the new state. It is a proof of ownership thing to protect people from the trafficking of stolen cars. This is what you are seeing on those court shows. Possibly there may be a lender involved that will hold the title as security, if someone sells that vehicle he does not own it, the bank or lender does. The registered owner is a different deal. The title may have a registered owner and a lien holder. The lien holder holds the title until the lien is satisfied. The banks or car dealerships do not hold the ownership for the vehicle up here. The vehicle has the same ownership paper (card) in it whether it has a lien against it or not. It does not,for instance, say Such and Such Dodge Inc. dealership on the ownership. It would just have the name of the owner even before he pays off the loan. I suspect this is where we Canucks and Yanks differ. The loaner does not keep the 'title' as collateral. A police officer looking at your ownership during a traffic stop would not know if you or the bank 'own' the vehicle. It's none of their business.
