Cycling: Australia's former world champion Cadel Evans climbed to third overall at the end of the first road stage of the Criterium du Dauphine to confirm his wellbeing ahead of the Tour de France.

Jurgen Van den Broeck, from Belgium, held off a late charge from a small group in the final climb to win the stage as veteran Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan took the overall lead.

Van den Broeck, finished fifth in last year's Tour de France, completed the 144km ride six seconds clear of Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver, from Spain, with another second back to Evans - who is clearly in good form for the Tour de France.

Cricket:  The Poms gave themselves a good chance to win the Test series against Sri Lanka with a match to spare despite losing skipper Andrew Strauss for a duck at Lord's overnight.

The home team were 2-149 in their second innings at stumps on the fourth day of the second Test - a lead of 156 - with Alastair Cook 61 not out.

Cook finished the day under floodlights, having put on 117 with Jonathan Trott for the second wicket.

FIFA banned the hijab scarf in 2007 for safety reasons - the dress was deemed to be a choking risk - and officials reiterated that ruling when the Iranian players took to the pitch for the qualifier against Jordan on Friday.
