Final exams — make it or break it

It’s that time of year. Finals are right around the corner. Students are panicking. Final exams loom large on the horizon and may make the difference between pass and fail. What is the best way to prepare for finals?

Students: if you’re not sure of what is being covered in the final, ask the teacher. Will a study guide be used for review? Is there going to be a class review with a notes sheet? If there is no handout, make two-column sheets to be used during the review. Make the left-side column take up one one third of the page and the right-side column take up two thirds. Jot down concept/keyword jotted in left side column; explanation in the larger right side. Ask what format the final will be: essay? true/false? multiple choice? Open-ended questions? A combination of those?

Review your textbook by reading the questions at the end of the chapters. If you can answer the questions, don’t waste time studying those concepts. Review the bolded “keywords” and the “learning objectives” that are usually printed at the beginning of each chapter. Look at the pictures and captions in each chapter and use Post-it notes to reference important objectives/concepts. Write those keywords and objectives on index cards and explain them in your own words.

Pull out old homework papers, quizzes and tests and review them. What did you get wrong? Review your incorrect work; don’t waste time on what you already know. Compare those bolded keywords to your test questions. Explain difficult concepts to your parents. If you can teach a concept to someone else, you know those materials. Start early. Don’t wait until the night before to cram.

Parents: Make sure your child does the review homework and reading assignments, and spaces out the review materials to eliminate cramming. Encourage, but don’t pressure. Keep a positive attitude about finals. Ask your child to explain concepts from the study materials. Help make the flash cards and review them. Repetition is very important. Review the kind of questions that will be on the test and rephrase the key terms using that testing format, i.e. true/false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank. Remind your kids not to leave a multiple choice or true/false question blank and to write legibly and to proofread the work. Make it as easy as possible for the teacher to grade high by making the written responses easy to read. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before taking finals.

Kids get computers at lot earlier in life; experts by the age of ten and hacking the Pentagon by the age of fifteen. Simply put; kids utilising computers from a young age can work to our benefit. Why haven’t schools used this to their advantage and make it work for them? A simple question with massive implications.
