Annan’s St Columba’s RC Primary School earns education inspectors’ praises

SCHOOL inspectors have praised the only Roman Catholic school for Annandale and Eskdale.

They say St Columba’s RC Primary School in Annan, which will celebrate 50 years at Shawhill Road next year, provides “a supportive learning environment where children feel happy and nurtured.”

And found the pupils themselves are “proud of their school” and feel “encouraged to do their best.”

Almost all parents think the school helps their children to become more confident and think their children’s learning is progressing well.

Following their inspection in April, HM Inspectorate of education identified that one of the key strengths of St Columba’s was the positive start made by new headteacher Mr Barry McIntyre in taking the school forward.

The report states: “Since taking up post, the headteacher has worked with staff, parents and children to develop a clear direction for the school. Under his effective leadership the focus on school values has encouraged a renewed sense of purpose.”

Other key strength are “happy children who enjoy learning in a supportive school setting” and a “shared commitment of staff to provide a nurturing learning environment for children.”

The inspectors’ evaluation for learners’ experience, meeting learners needs and improvements in performance was “good.”

Liz Baxter, the council’s quality improvement manager said: “The commitment and dedication of the head teacher and staff, the engagement and motivation of learners and the positive involvement of parents bring a strong sense of a learning community.

“There is a clear direction for the school and it is well placed to continue to take forward a Curriculum for Excellence.”

The inspectors say the school and education authority should continue to take forward Curriculum for Excellence at St Columba’s and further improve approaches to self-evaluation.

The denominational school had a roll of 64 during the inspection with attendance at national average.

The report says that the pupils feel valued and respond positively to encouragement and support from their teachers who have “high expectations” of children and have “created a supportive and caring ethos.

Learning Mathematics through Realistic Mathematics Education ...

Learning Mathematics through Realistic Mathematics Education Approach – Realistic mathematics teaching begins with the phenomenon, then the student with the help of teachers are given the opportunity to rediscover and to construct its own concept. After that, applied to everyday problems or in other fields. Characteristics of PMR is to use the context of ‘real world’, models, production and construction students, interactive and linkages. The application of each principle by the teacher in Realistic Mathematics Education as follows: The first principle will be seen whether the teacher started the lesson by example in daily life and gives troubleshooting problems that often occur in the lives of students. The second principle, whether teachers use visual aids that help students discover the formula and guide students to use it. The third principle, whether the teacher gave the students to create their own modeling in the search for formal completion. The fourth principle, if the teacher gives oral questions when teaching and learning activities take place and give an explanation about the material and student discovery. The fifth principle, whether the teacher gave the questions regarding the content of other subjects in mathematics or other subject matter.

Education is the key to all progress and development of quality, because with education people can realize all his potential both as individuals and as citizens. In order to realize our potential into multiple competency must pass through the educational process is implemented in the learning process.

Ongoing learning process cannot be separated with the surrounding environment. Real learning is not confined to the four walls of the classroom. Learning environment with clear approaches saturation and create students who love the environment.

Based on the theory of learning, through a meaningful approach to learning environments. Attitudes of students toward mastery of concepts verbalisme can be minimized and understanding students will imprint in his memory.

The fruits of education and learning process will eventually lead to the environment. The benefits of learning will be felt when what is gained from learning can be applied and implemented in the reality of life. This is one positive side to the approach underlying the learning environment.
