Not knowing the exact problem, but going upon what I have seen and read, I would make sure that my drivers are up to date. We have had similar problems where it would stop working at unusual points and for no specific reasons. These have almost always been solved by reloading the drivers. I don't know why the drivers become corrupted, but at least it is easy to try.

Harry - No the Alps are no longer sold retail but you can get them on ebay. However, you never know what you are going to get. Your best bet is to buy one on ebay that doesn't work but is very cheap, then send it in to alps to have it refurbished. It costs $350 but you basically have a new printer with a 90 day warranty (see the link above or below and click on printer repairs in the left hand column).

Mirriam - If you like the printer and want to keep it, send it in to be refurbished (see link above or below). We just had ours returned. It was not the exact same printer, but it is a replacement that is as good as new. If you just want to get rid of it, contact me sonomalk@aol.com (click on the blue 'jim' if the email link doesn't show) and I will forward the info to my dad (you two can haggle over a price) or you can sell it 'as is' on ebay.
