Saddle-trained wild horses will be auctioned in Hutchinson 0 comments BY amy renee leiker The Wichita EagleAn federal agency responsible for managing thousands of free-roaming wild horses will hold its annual adoption auction at the Hutchinson prison next week.
The Bureau of Land Management will be at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility June 10 and 11 to auction off 10 saddle-trained wild horses and two two-horse driving teams. Starting bids for trained wild horses range from $350 to $500 and $2,000 for teams.
Untrained wild horses can also be adopted for a flat fee of $125.
The bureau manages more than 38,000 wild horses and burros on 26.9 million acres of public rangleland in the western states. To maintain a healthy herd, the bureau periodically sends horses to holding facilities, where they are trained and offered to the public for adoption, bureau public affairs specialist Paul McGuire said.
"This adoption program... plugs back into our core mission of managing wild horses on the public ranges back West," McGuire said.
Hutchinson Correctional Facility, one of several short-term holding facilities for the animals, offers 350 wild horses for adoption year-round, McGuire said. Prison inmates train the horses.
Currently, more than 41,000 horses are held in holding facilities nationwide.
The bureau will showcase the horses and accept adoption applications from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 10 and from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on June 11 at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, located west of K-61 on G Street in Hutchinson.
The auction starts at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 18 years old with no history of animal abuse. The bureau also requires that bidders provide 400 square feet of fenced corral per animal. Applicants may adopt up to four horses.
