<strong><span class="subhead">Catch of the week</span></strong></p><p>Jack Krueger calls the big marlin he caught recently &#x201C;a once-in-a-lifetime fish.&#x201D;</p><p>And that&#x2019;s saying something; his lifetime has spanned 83 years.</p><p>Fishing off a charter boat in the Baja Peninsula off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, he caught the fish on a big saltwater fly.</p><p>&#x201C;They troll with big teasers to attract the marlin,&#x201D; said Krueger, who lives in Lee&#x2019;s Summit. &#x201C;When the marlin comes up, they pull the lines and you have to cast your fly right as they&#x2019;re pulling the teasers out of the water.</p><p>&#x201C;I must have put the fly at the right place, because I got a hookup right away.&#x201D;</p><p>Then the fight was on. Krueger battled the marlin, which the charter captain estimated at 100 pounds, for 45 minutes, thrilling to the fish&#x2019;s many jumps. When he finally landed the fish, a few pictures were taken and then the fish was released.</p><p>Krueger was fishing with his two sons and grandsons. One of his grandsons, Michael Krueger, also caught a big marlin on the trip.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">Charges filed in tournament case</span></strong></p><p>David Gann, 72, of Warsaw, Mo., is facing a felony charge for allegedly cheating in a bass tournament in early June at Truman Lake.</p><p>He is charged with attempt to steal by deceit for attempting to weigh in fish caught several days before the event.</p><p>Before the tournament, fishermen looking to set trotlines came across a cage that contained three largemouth bass. They contacted conservation agents with the Missouri Department of Conservation who clipped the fins on the fish and put them back in the cage.</p><p>Agents then watched the site during the tournament and observed Gann remove two of the bass and put them in his livewell.</p><p>Gann has pleaded not guilty in Benton County Circuit Court.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">Bass team is championship caliber</span></strong></p><p>Jeff Brin of Olathe led the Kansas state team to a championship last week in the Bass Federation&#x2019;s central divisional at Wilson Lake in central Kansas.</p><p>Brin won the individual title with a three-day total of 31 pounds. He and teammate Mike Blaha of Salina, Kan., will advance to the national championship.</p><p>It marked the first time that the Kansas team has won the team title. The team of 12 fishermen bested seven other teams.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">Flooding affects Squaw Creek</span></strong></p><p>Flooding from the Missouri River and its tributaries is causing problems at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Missouri.</p><p>The auto tour route has been closed because of water pouring into the refuge. Most of the wetlands are flooded, causing refuge officials to worry about habitat damage and loss of moist-soil food that had been planted.</p><p>The refuge headquarters, however, remains open and hiking trails on higher ground are still in use.</p><p><hr class="infobox-hr-separator" /> <div class="infobox"> @ Go to <strong>KansasCity.com</strong> for weekly fishing reports, solunar tables and results from the tournament fishing trail.
