SPRING VALLEY — The May 14 Hall of Fame/Awards Night ceremony at Hall High School made for a special night to connect both former Red Devil greats with the current Hall athletes.
Hall of Famer Leroy Lunn, a former Red Devil football great, presented Hall senior Anthony Urbanski with the Black Lion Award. This award is given in memory of Major Don Holleder, a former West Point All-American football player who died in combat in Vietnam in 1967. Not an individual award in the same sense as a Most Valuable Player award, the Black Lion is awarded to the individual “who best exemplifies the character of Don Holleder: Leadership, courage, devotion to duty, self-sacrifice, and above all, an unselfish concern for the team ahead of himself.”
Urbanski also received the Richard Nesti Football Award and the Richard Nesti Athlete of the Year Award.
The Richard Nesti Football Award is awarded to a two-year letterman in varsity football, who has maintained the highest scholastic average during his junior and senior years.
The Richard Nesti Athlete of the Year Award is awarded to a male athlete who must have lettered in football, basketball and one spring sport his senior year. He must have a 4.0 average or better and considered to be a good citizen.
Shealey Lock received the Alice J. Schibrowsky Award, which honors a senior girl, who has participated in the athletic program each of her four years, and has maintained a grade point average of 4.0 or better.
Both the Schibrowsky and Nesti Athlete Awards are voted on by the Hall coaching staff.
The third individual award is the Father Garrahan Award, which went to Dean Colmone. The award goes to a male athlete who has lettered in one or more sports and has the highest scholarship during his junior year and first semester of senior year.
Baseball award winners included: Scott Coutts (MVP), Brett Fanning (best on base percentage, Best ERA, Highest Batting Average), Tanner McCormick (Heart and Hustle) and Danny Nolasco (Most Wins).
Girls basketball award winners were Johnna Schultz (Most Improved), Elizabeth Mosbach (Miss Hustle), Brigitte Klein (MVP), Jaclyn Kain (Most Points) and Kelle Nett (Most Rebounds).
In boys basketball, awards went to Brian Kruse (Most Improved), Tyler Thompson (Free Throws) and Urbanski (Best Defense).
In bowling, David McManus and Kelsey Haslam were named Most Valuable; Tony Biccochi and Liz Edington received Most Improved; and McManus and Kaitlyn Padgett received High Series.
