Stepping out from humble beginnings

THE £125 million sale of Schuh to US clothing giant Genesco has been described as a win-win situation by staff, and it’s hard to argue with that.

From humble beginnings on North Bridge in Edinburgh 30 years ago, the retailer has become one of Scotland’s most successful fashion firms.

Schuh made its mark selling brands like Kickers and Cater-pillar to the youth market in the 1980s and 1990s and continued that success into the 21st century with brands like Con-verse and ethical shoes Toms.

While other retailers like LK Bennett cornered the luxury end of the market, Schuh made the brand-led sports and casual sectors its own. It’s a policy that has worked well as Schuh has become one of the most recognisable and trusted footwear retailers in the UK.

The masterstroke came when it moved into online retailing. In an interview earlier this week, managing director Colin Temple admitted to me he first tried selling shoes online “to prove it wouldn’t work” but was thrilled to discover customers were eager to buy shoes from their website as well as their stores.

Call it forward thinking, call it flexibility, but whatever you call it, Schuh definitely has it. And now its bosses and its staff are reaping the rewards.
