EA's Secret World online game is nothing like World of Warcraft
Electronic Arts has a game like online play supergiant of Blizzard Entertainment, World of Warcraft in the works - but it seems that the game publisher has more than one trick up his sleeve. The company unveiled its upcoming online role-playing game, The Secret World Summer Games to his window on Thursday.
Secret World is a stylized take the modern era, where vampires, secret societies and all the horror stories you heard as a kid are real.Players take control of a character in one of three secret societies trying to keep the world from plunging into chaos, while fighting for control of the planet.
Secret World is developed by Funcom, the studio behind online game Age of Conan. This is the second role-playing online game Electronic Arts plans to release alongside Star Wars: The Old Republic, being developed by BioWare. While The Old Republic seems quite similar to World of Warcraft in terms of growth and style of gameplay, The Secret World is in line with almost diametrically opposed.
The progression system is one of the most unusual I've seen in online gaming time. It seems almost like a spiritual successor to Star Wars Galaxies, in that the player does not "level up" in the traditional sense, but additions and updates to new skills. In Secret World, "leveling up" is simply the most versatile character - not necessarily more powerful.
Most online role-playing games feature a linear progression to light. For example, in World of Warcraft, when a player level, they do more damage, gain more health and sometimes get access to new capacity.But they are limited to building up the power of the class they have chosen - if they chose a warrior, they get an ability that allows them to do more melee damage.
There are no such classes in Secret World. There are traditional archetypes: deals damage, healing, and the characters that control the enemies and make sure they take all the damage. But how do you play these archetypes is yours because you can choose which skills you want. You can change these skills in some places around the world.If you want, you can build a character that can heal and also shoot lightning to kill the enemies, then run and finish them with a giant hammer.
While the leveling system and design aesthetic appears to be unique, the rest of the tropes typical online role-playing games are Secret World. Players explore an open world and five players enter dungeon parts which consist of a healer, a tank and three damage-dealing classes. Fighting against bosses well enough to use the environment as the electrification of water and forcing the player to stay in constant motion.
