The best kept secret of a nice place to visit is the small Canadian town close to Niagara Falls called Niagara-on-the-Lake. We just happened to be on a highway on our way to the falls and passed through this wonderful scenic town. After spending time in Niagara Falls, we ventured back to Niagara-on-the-Lake and spent some time there seeing many historical sites.

We visited a winery, several unique shops, Fort George, George Bernard Shaw's statue, the historic tour of the homestead of Laura Secord and a few other historical museums. The town was filled with tourists and flowers were in bloom everywhere. The Historical Preservation committee had done a great job with the preservation of the many buildings we visited.

It would be a nice place to stay for a couple of days and go to surrounding areas while visiting the falls. They have several parks, two major waterways, several great restaurants, a great wine industry and a good choices of places to stay. We loved the Prince of Wales Hotel. Be sure to stop in, even if you aren't spending the night.

The U.S. dollar is accepted in most of the places or Canadian dollars called "loonies."

Niagara-on-the-Lake was founded in the late 1770s and was a place for Loyalists who were fleeing the Colonies to stay, as well as, a military camp in the war of American Independence and 1812. It was captured by the Americans and later it was burned. The people were of strong constitution and they determinately rebuilt the historic area.

Fort George is a National Historic Site and one can visit the bunkers, blockhouses, ramparts, palisades and capture the feeling of life in a fort.

My favorite place was St. Mark's Anglican Church, which is thought to be one of the oldest used parishes of the Church of England in North America. Don't miss the adjoining cemetery which is rich with history. The cemetery was founded in 1792 and was used as a hospital during the War of 1812.

At the Olde Angel Inn there is a ghost like air of a British officer who was killed there in 1813. The inn was built in 1789, burned in the war and rebuilt in 1815. If you haven't eaten poutine, try it just once. It is popular in Canada and is actually French fries, covered with cheese curds and barbecue chicken gravy. Hum? No, I did not say "Yummy!" I decided you have to acquire a taste for that dish.

For bikers, the mountain trails are plentiful and very scenic. The best route is along the Niagara River Recreation Trail. It is 35 miles long, runs along the river, starts at Fort George goes through the town of Niagara and ends at Fort Erie.

Kill Two Birds With One Stone When You Go To Niagara Falls
