Local team makes 'High School Quiz Show' history

HAMILTON — Hours after they were handed their diplomas and graduated from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High, three seniors made TV history last night as part of a team crowned state champions on WGBH's "High School Quiz Show."
The show, taped about a month ago, aired last night at 7 in a one-hour episode featuring a segment on the towns that included a visit by host Billy Costa to Hamilton-Wenham Regional.
The students, seniors Emma Sandler of Hamilton, Greg Lidrbauch of Hamilton and Hannah Buckler of Wenham and junior Chris Anderson of Hamilton, matched wits against Mt. Greylock Regional High in western Massachusetts. Mt. Greylock had won the show "As Schools Match Wits," a co-production of WGBH's sister station WGBY and Westfield State University, giving it the right to take on the local team.
Last night, Chris, Emma and Hannah; their families and friends; and history teacher and College Bowl coach Vinny Bucci gathered at the Black Cow restaurant to watch the finals. It's a place where the team and its well-wishers had gathered to watch the show in the past. The students were somewhat subdued when they were announced winners, in part because they had to bottle up news about their win for a month.
"It's been really weird to be keeping a secret for so long," said Chris' mom, Laura Mok, who arranged the gatherings at the Black Cow.
Manager Connie Collins said the owner, Joe Leone, even had two large-screen TVs installed so everyone could watch.
In one behind-the scenes segment of the broadcast, Costa visited Hamilton, which he described as a place "where there are no teahouses, but plenty of horses."
The segment included a visit to the Black Cow and an interview with Collins in the very same restaurant where everyone was gathered last night.
