Volunteers from as far away as Wisconsin search for missing Ludington 4-month ...

Volunteers from across West Michigan and as far away as Wisconsin are still searching for a missing 4-month-old Ludington girl, more than a week after she was last seen.

Katherine Shelbie-Elizabeth Phillips was abducted June 29 outside her mother’s home in Birch Lake Apartments, 922 E. Tinkham. Her alleged kidnapper, Sean Michael Phillips , was later arrested at his parents’ house, 280 Middleton in Scottville, but Kate was not with him.

Deb Briske, a member of “Kate’s Team” of family and close friends, said anyone 16 or older, with a valid identification card, can participate in the search. About 20 family members and close friends participated Wednesday, she said, as well as 16 people from the general community.

People have driven from Muskegon, Grand Rapids, Fremont and as far away as Lansing to help with the search, Briske said. One mother and her son even took the carferry S.S. Badger from Manitowoc, Wis., to help for a few hours.

"I asked if they were visiting, and they said" We come for the day to help, "she said.

Tourists who happened to be in the city have also done their part, she said. A couple of Ohio has seen leaflets about the disappearance of Kate and offered to help research.

"They said they would walk 18 miles a day, so they might as well do it in a good place" to help, Briske said.

"We still need tons more people on the ground," she said Wednesday. "We have all kinds of places for each condition.”

Briske said “Kate’s Team” is planning a “Day for Kate” Saturday, when volunteers will search from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“We’re hoping to pull in hundreds or thousands of volunteers,” she said.

Volunteers should wear long pants and sturdy shoes because the terrain can be marshy, Briske said, though people with health conditions can search less physically demanding areas like parks.

Police continued searching along U.S. 31 Wednesday, while volunteers fanned out in woods and parks in the Ludington area. Phillips, who is charged with kidnapping, is lodged in the Mason County jail and is not cooperating, authorities said. Kate Phillips' mother has identified him as Kate's father, but that has not yet been determined in court.

Amber Cuffman, of Ludington, said she came out to volunteer because she knows Kate’s mother, Ariel Courtland , and has three children of her own.
