Metro Vancouver a leader in transit use
Canadian transit ridership numbers are on the upswing and Vancouver is leading the pack.
A new report shows Metro Vancouver’s transit system increased 22 million rides from 2009 to 2010, to more than 211.3 million rides in all.
Vancouver ridership rose 12.5 per cent, compared to a national increase of four per cent.
Industry think-tank Canadian Urban Transit Association released its findings Monday, announcing an “all-time record” of 1.9 billion trips taken nationwide from 2009 to 2010.
The authority is recommending transit companies increase capital spending for infrastructure and asset upgrades to keep up with growth.
“In Vancouver’s case … there was significant new services introduced with the opening of the Canada Line,” said CUTA president Michael Roschlau. “It’s had a lasting effect well beyond the actual event of the Olympics.”
But TransLink refutes the numbers, calling them “skewed” from the 2010 Olympic celebrations. In February that year, 49 per cent of TransLink’s rides could be attributed to the Games.
“Total growth in passenger revenue was 12.5 per cent,” said TransLink spokeswoman Erin McConnell.
She added the transit authority only has six months of 2009 data and inflated data from 2010 because of the Games.
While the Crown corporation has seen “more passengers” it can’t expand services unless the provincial government and mayors council’s proposed two-cents-a-litre gas tax is implemented.
If approved, the levy will provide TransLink with $44 million in public funding annually, with the possibility of another $29 million to be decided by the mayors’ council.
TransLink will provide $400 million for the entire course of the upgrades to meet the goals by 2040.

Lokeynote was one of the first producers in Hip Hop that caught my attention when I moved to Vancouver. Like many producers he began making beats for his own raps and has now become one of the must haves on any Vancouver Hip Hop album. Starting only 10 years ago and only 5 years ago in Vancouver it is amazing how much this producer has accomplished. Coming from Winnipeg to Calgary and now setting up shop in Vancouver Lokeynote’s skills transcend any genre providing many local artists with the engineering and production they need for an amazing album.

How did you get involved in other genres?
Lately I have been trying to expand the musicians I work with. If I hear an artist and I think they are really talented I will try and work with them. I like the best music of every genre so I am not afraid of trying to produce music other than hip hop. I have a background as a beat maker not as a musician so all the instruments I play are self taught. It can be a challenge to avoid putting my natural hip hop influence into the other genres. If you do, It increases the amount of tools you have in your toolbox.
How does internet help you produce and service your needs?
The internet is basically the hub of the music industry these days. Everything revolves around it. I use it for sharing sessions with different producers and engineers. Clients and collaborators can hear my up to date beats and what I am working on. I meet a lot of artists on the internet. The amount of music out there and the amount people are listening and sharing it is at an all time high. This is great for the artists because the fans want to see their live show.
Do you work with many artists outside of Vancouver?
I do but I try to focus on Vancouver because if I was to Shop beats to labels or artists here and there internationally or even nationally it is kind of a slower roll than if I focused on my city and tried to put the spotlight on Vancouver. If you can help a few artists here get some shine internationally then the eyes turn to us. If you are doing the right thing in your city at that time, then you will be one of those successful people in the international industry. From home.
