ROLLER DERBY IN TAUNTON: Helen on wheels
Someone called it what would happen if NASCAR and rugby ever got together and had a child.
Another person described it as what punk rock would look like if it were a sport.
Or maybe it’s the love child of football and hockey, sans the sticks and balls.
The “it” they all speak of is roller derby, and it’s experiencing something of a rebirth among the ladies thanks to the Mass Attack Roller Derby women’s squad. The local team is based out of the Silver City Sports Complex in Taunton.
“You meet the most amazing people in roller derby,” said Christine Buhagiar, better known around the track as Burnin’ Helen. “Lawyers, nurses, a radiation technician, assorted other professional people, moms ... people from all walks of life that you could imagine. And they’re all awesome people. You come to the roller rink, and it’s immediately like you are part of a family. You meet all these crazy people that you might have ever encountered in real life.
“In roller derby you end up being best friends with the weirdest people. That’s what’s awesome about the sport.”
Buhagiar had a friend who was on a roller derby team, Sis Boom Bonnie, and after watching the 2009 movie Whip It , she thought it looked like a fun diversion.
“Bonnie brought me to a practice a while back and I was absolutely hooked. I didn’t even really know how to skate, but I knew I wanted to be a part of this sport,” she said. “So I got some skates and here I am.”
Several years later, Buhagiar is still having an absolute ball whipping around the track oval.
“I skated in a league down in Providence, but some of the other girls (on the Mass. Attack) are still new to the sport,” she said. “The older skaters really enjoy teaching the newer skaters the business of the sport while passing on our love of the game. There are leagues in Boston, Providence and several others around New England. They’re popping up all over the place.”
The actual Mass. Attack team took root in November of last year. Team founder Jam Dizzle, aka Fall River native Jamie Perrault, became familiar with the sport when she was living on a military base in North Carolina.
“I was a military housewife, and I guess I was a little bored, so I started skating with the Cape Fear Roller Girls,” Perrault recalled. “It was a great way for me to get out and meet some people.
