Rent to Own: It's a Permanent Thing

, There were the beatniks; before that, the flappers, the free-love movements in the 19th century and bratty Israelites in the Bible.  Of course, today’s fans could have seen the show anytime  during the show’s 12-year run that began Off-Broadway in 1994 and moved to Broadway, or watched the 2005 movie starring Jesse L Martin and Idina Menzel. of the generation of playwright/composer Jonathan Larson, who died tragically of an aneurysm after the final dress rehearsal and never saw his show open.  I was even an unemployed artist  in the early 90s.  But while there are some surface similarities between the threat of AIDS in the East Village in the 90s and the threat of consumption in  La Bohème

But back to the show.  There are many characters, but I didn’t find it too difficult to keep the multicultural  cast straight.  Mark is Jewish; Mimi is Latina, and so on.  Mark (Adam Chanler-Berat) takes videos of his friends, a device that allows him to narrate and tell us about the people he’s filming:  Roger (Matt Shingledecker), recovering from rehab and the suicide of a girlfriend who left a note saying “we’ve got AIDS,” and who just wants to write one great song; Mimi (Arianda Fernancez), the beautiful, damaged dancer with AIDS; Angel (MJ Rodriguez), the cross-dresser whose good heart moves everyone; Tom Collins (Nicholas Christopher), the professor cum drop-out, who takes up with Angel after getting beaten up by some thugs, Maureen (Annaleigh Ashford), the performance artist, also Mark’s ex, involved with wealthy, Harvard-educated  Joanne (Corbin Reid), and Benny (Ephraim Sykes), the landlord of the squat where a bunch of them live.  He used to live with them, but married a wealthy woman in Westport who pays all his bills and now he’s an Evil Yuppie.  We never meet his Sugar Mamma, and it’s hard not to feel sorry for her (that is, if you’re paying attention; one of my younger companions managed to miss her existence altogether).  That’s a lot to read in a paragraph like this, but not so hard to follow as you watch.

Act I involves the kids threatened with having to pay a year’s back rent to Benny, as well as a performance protest by Maureen and then a riot about the demolition of a homeless tent city next door.  Mark’s footage of the riot lands him a network job, which he will renounce in favor of artistic freedom by the end of the show.  The tent city protest device does allow the show’s funniest scene, Maureen’s hilarious performance art piece, “Over the Moon,” in which she gets the whole audience to moo with her.

Rent to Own: It's a Permanent Thing

But while there are some surface similarities between the threat of AIDS in the East Village in the 90s and the threat of consumption in La Bohème (an idea first conceived by Billy Aronson, who also wrote some lyrics), the differences run deep too.

Lollapalooza day two: The good and bad

Unfortunately for these people there weren't many speakers pointing in their direction, sometimes making it tough to hear the lyrics. Eminem furiously worked the stage, but his vocals at times were reduced to a whisper behind the music's heavy bass. 5.

Articles 20VN | How to Find Your Best Songs | best songs | high ...

Choosing the best songs for you and then making them your own takes some thought.
When you find a song that you like, here is a 5-step process that will help you to determine:

1. - if this is a quality song
2. - how to make the song work for you!

Ok, you have chosen a song you would like to sing. Let us start with looking carefully at:

The Lyrics

If you do not have sheet music, print the lyrics from the internet and begin by reading them out loud.

1. As you read, listen to how the lyrics flow. Do you like what the lyrics say? Do they tell a story that you can relate to?

2. Read the lyrics again, and this time look for the high points in the song? Are there natural climaxes in the words?
The main climax may come in the chorus or it may only come at the end of the song. But there can be a variety of high points in a song. Try to find these in the lyrics.

The Melody

By now, you know the melody of your song. You likely chose this song based on how much you enjoyed the melody. But here is another important aspect of the melody - the arc.

To find the arc of the song, trace how it moves through time in terms of its ups and downs - its high points (climaxes) and points of less tension. For instance, many songs build to a climax at the end of the song. But there are usually other less intense high points along the way, as well.

Some songs hit the high point mid-way through the piece, and then gradually cool off. Still others have may have several true climaxes. Your job is to chart the contour (the arc) of your song and decide how you will handle each high point; that is - how you will build (vocally) to those places in the song and keep the momentum of the song steady throughout the whole piece.

This kind of work is what gives a song its thrill and allows you to use your best vocal abilities based on your vocal choices.

The Chords

When you listen to the song, also note places where an unusual chord or pattern of chords is used. And be aware of any key changes in the song. These kinds of changes increase the intensity of the song. You can add to that intensity with special vocal effects.

Vocal Choices

Now comes the really fun part - deciding how you will sing the song that will make it one of your best songs.

o You understand how the lyrics flow - where the dramatic high points are in the song.
