Belton driver Pat McGuire put his 9 car out front quick on the green flag, but spun on lap two, handing Doug Lorenz of Harker Heights the lead. One lap later, Lorenz's No. 97 saw Pflugerville driver Ben "Just Married" Ketteman in the 37 go by. Ketteman, ranked fourth nationally, slowed on the backstretch when it sounded like his engine coughed, allowing the 5K car of Belton's Kenny "Mr. Barbecue" Stone to take charge. Stone rocked along for three circuits until the scoreboard counter hit nine. All of a sudden, I looked up from my notebook and there was the 303 car of second-ranked Chase Jupe passing Stone. The Waco driver and track points leader rapidly built up a half-lap lead over second-place Stone, eventually stretching his advantage to 4.67 seconds, but then came what any race car driver with a big lead hates to see — a caution flag. For the first six laps, the 41 car, driven by Georgetown's Jeremy Wininger, who's currently ranked as the class's top rookie nationally and region-wise, held court out front, but was passed on the inside going into turn two by the 25 of Robinson driver "Marvelous" Michael Guenat. Bellmead's "Awesome" Andy Roller was nearby in the No. 63 and the national points leader challenged third-ranked Guenat tooth and nail, with never more than 10 feet separating the two. In the night's tightest finish, Guenat won it by a half car length. The IMCA Southern SportMod feature started off with Killeen driver Randy "Flipper" Doyle's 65 chasing the 48 car of Temple's Mitch Tierney for the first nine circuits. Doyle dropped low and made an inside pass in turn one to take a short-lived lead, only to surrender the top spot to Waco driver Kevin "L'il Brother" Green, who came from nowhere two laps later in his 5D car and held off the field all the way to the checkers. Right off the bat, Salado-based McPherson and former track promoter Pat Wilson of Harker Heights were battling for the lead, when somebody hit Wilson's No. 7, turning it sideways in turn four. McPherson had nowhere to go, resulting in both the 7 cars scraping each other to a stop, while Valentine appeared to crunch the rear of his father-in-law's car. Once McPherson and Wilson got their cars off track, Valentine, whose ride was none the worse for wear, took over on lap five. He hammered down, all the while keeping a wary eye on Killeen's Eric "Easy E" Jones in the 84X and Harker Heights driver Jason "The Acro" Batt's 9 car.
