Last act for Glen Este's Michelle Thomas – state title
WEST CLERMONT – She has been to the state meet all four years of her career at Glen Este High School. She entered Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium as the defending champion in the 3,200 meter run and left as the two-time champion, with a winning time of 10:48.32. She leaves Glen Este as one of their most decorated athletes ever.
Michelle Thomas can seemingly run forever, and she does it a lot.
It’s not unusual to see her getting her roadwork in around the parking lot and adjoining streets in the Union Township area.
Prior to heading to Columbus to run at the school she’ll soon attend, Thomas spoke to the Community Press.
Your coach (Angie Carson) tells me you’ve made the state meet all four years. “I didn’t make the podium as a freshman, I finished ninth (one away from the podium). But yeah.” When is your race? “Saturday at 6:10.” It might be kind of hot out, do you like the heat? “Yes, I love the heat.” In cross country, most runners like the cooler weather. “I’m kind of weird. I like either extreme heat or extreme cold.” Your dad brought you here to practice (at Glen Este) is he going to run with you? “Yes. My dad’s been to every meet since I was in seventh grade. He comes to practice with me now to help me (since) our team’s done. He’s another coach for me during the summer when coach Carson’s not allowed to train us.” When did you find out that you could come out and run a handful of laps and just beat everybody? “Actually, when I was a freshman, coach Carson told me I could be really good if I just put my mind to it and we trained hard. My dad and her kind of helped me and said, ‘If you keep training hard and keep working on it, you can make it to state.’Â I really had no idea what state was. I didn’t really know there was such (a) thing for running. When I went there for the first time, it was like amazing to see everything that was there. That’s what really made me determined. Once I went there my freshman year, I saw how amazing these runners were and I wanted to be like them.” You’re going to Ohio State next year, so you’re going to be on home “turf.

West Clermont graduation requirements change for class of 2014 ...

Students planning to graduate from the West Clermont Local School District in and after 2014 will have slightly different graduation requirements.
The district’s board of education decided to change the requirements to save money and to be more in-line with the state standards, said Assistant Superintendent Mary-Ellen Steele-Pierce.
To graduate from West Clermont, students currently need four language arts credits, half of a health credit, half of a physical education credit, three math credits, three science credits, three social studies credits, one fine arts credit and five elective credits. The new requirements will mean students have to take one additional math class and will need one fewer elective credit, according to the district’s standards.
There also are some changes to exactly what classes students have to take. Starting with the Class of 2014, the math credits must include one unit of algebra II or the equivalent, the science credits must include one unit of physical science and one unit of life science, and the social studies credit must include a half unit of American history and a half-unit of American government. Students also will be required to receive instruction in economics and financial literacy, the requirements state.
Superintendent Gary Brooks said changing the graduation requirements will require the district to offer fewer electives.
“Fewer electives result in the need for fewer staff. Like every other district in Ohio, we’re looking for ways to reduce our operating expenses as demanded by the taxpayers,” he said. “This will help us save money.”
Although some electives will be cut, Steele-Pierce, who heads up the Teaching and Learning Department, is not concerned on the impact the changes could have on students.
